António Bolota (Benguela,1962), whose formation as an engineer inevitably influenced his practice as an artist, creates sculptures that challenge the spaces where they are located, as well as their architecture, using several different materials. Bolota’s drawings are halfway between two-dimension and three-dimension, but the issue that brings them together is not one of scale or volumetry; rather, it is the way in which they are born from the plane and conquer space, unfolding in materiality, shadow and colour. Through his drawings, in their fragile presence and their surprising balance in space, he explores the relationships between weight and lightness, tension and balance, gesture and matter.

Catarina Dias (London, 1979) associates plastic languages in an idiosyncratic way, reflecting the continuous mutation of the act of thinking in relation with what surround us. Between materials and associations of ideas, artistic genres, and mental faculties, between the “interior” and the “exterior”, in the work by Catarina Dias, this interiority is revealed not so much as a reflection of what she thinks, but as a mental space in search of a body. “I was always fascinated by the act of thinking”, she says “the virtual space of thought is fascinating. When connected to this idea, the exhibition space is also a virtual space.” Somehow, the text is the element that defines a path. Catarina Dias materializes poetry through the gestures of drawing, often superimposing the latter on the surface of a painting that is nothing like a page of a book.

In Susanne S. D. Themlitz’s work (Lisbon, 1968), drawing is a practice intimately connected to the development of idiosyncratic mechanisms between thought and imagination, therefore, a medium that allows her to explore and feed processes of oddity. Each drawing assumes a cut with the exterior. The off-field doesn’t exist. Everything is inside, in this inner world, with its singular meteorology and with the unique capacity of gathering forces, energies and vibrations that distinguish it as a peculiar reality.
