If the sky is the first book then the stars are the first letters. All ideas, desires and memories can be read there. The sky holds all the words one can imagine.

The Italian philosopher and poet Giordano Bruno read the infinitude of the universe in the sky. In what his eyes saw, he listened to his imagination: knowledge is observation and creation. In 1584, he published the book “On the Infinite Universe and the Worlds”. His boundless thinking opened up new perspectives in cosmology and for the history of ideas.

Se o céu é o primeiro livro, as estrelas são as primeiras letras. Nele cabem todas as ideias, todos os desejos, todas as memórias. No céu cabem todas as palavras que podemos imaginar.

Giordano Bruno, filósofo e poeta italiano, leu no céu a infinitude do universo. No que os olhos viram, escutou a imaginação: o conhecimento é observação e criação. Em 1584, publicou o livro Sobre o Infinito, o Universo e os Mundos. Seu pensamento sem limites abriu novas perspectivas na cosmologia e na história das ideias.

In Infinite, each sky is a page from Bruno’s book. The letters on a black background are no longer distinguishable, merging into the perspective of space. Except for a few white ones, which shine like stars. They write, in brief, infinite, as different constellations.

No Infinito, cada céu é uma página do livro de Bruno. Sobre o fundo preto, as letras já não se distinguem, fundindo-se na perspectiva do espaço. Salvo algumas, brancas, que brilham como estrelas, escrevendo em diferentes constelações, em síntese, infinito.

A garden is a microcosm, a particular space and time with its own rhythms. Within its limits one projects what is not there. Waves on the rocks, seas on the moon. Light rains on a mineral surface. Dry lands become imaginary seas. On an invisible alphabet, drops of light write the names of apparent seas: Serenitatis, Tranquilitatis, Insularum, Vaporum… Lunatic toponymy, a mirror of the Earth and its humours.

Um jardim é um microcosmo, com ritmos, regras, tempos. Dentro dos seus limites projetamos o que não está lá. Ondas nas pedras, mares na lua. Na superfície mineral, a luz chove. O solo seco vira mar imaginário. Gotas de luz caem sobre um alfabeto invisível, escrevendo nomes de mares que, sem jamais existirem, definem o mapa. Serenitatis, Tranquilitatis, Insularum, Vaporum… Toponímia lunar, espelho da Terra e de seus humores.

Where do the names come from? From another time, another place. Traveling through time and space like starlight, concentrating the matter of each letter at its core, writing past, present and future.

De onde vêm os nomes? De outro tempo, de outro lugar. Viajando no tempo e no espaço como a luz das estrelas, concentrando em seu núcleo a matéria de cada letra, escrevendo passado, presente e futuro.

If we can read the world, then the world is a word. Like the flowers in this garden, arranged in letters defined by the habit of counting and classifying. Six bunches whispering COSMOS in order, here alphabetical. Kalistos cosmos, says Heraclitus, the most beautiful order, the order of the world.

Se somos capazes de ler o mundo, é porque o mundo pode ser lido. Como as flores do jardim, arranjando- se em letras definidas pelo hábito de contar e classificar.

Angela Detanico (1974) and Rafael Lain (1973) are Brazilian artists living and working in Paris.

Their work explores the understanding and representation of reality through language, codes and visual systems. Their work navigates between text, sound and image in different media, proposing new forms of translation. Drawing on a wide range of sources, including the history of ideas, astronomy, art history, philosophy and literature, her research leads to the creation of sculptures, installations, texts, performances and drawings with the aim of proposing new processes for creating meaning through art forms. The experience and conceptualisation of time appears as a central theme in his research.

Their work has been shown in different countries and venues such as Centre Pompidou, Palais de Tokyo, and Grand Palais, (France); Moderna Museet (Sweden); CCS Bard Hessel Museum (USA); Mudam (Luxemburg); National Museum of Contemporary Art (Greece); ICC (Japan); Laboratorio de Arte Alameda (Mexico); Malba (Argentina); and Henry Moore Institute (England).

They took part in several international exhibitions as 3rd Media City Seoul, Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial 2006, 10th Bienal de la Havana and the 26th, 27th and 28th São Paulo Biennials, and presented individual exhibitions at Jeu de Paume, Musée de l’Abée Sainte-Croix and Musée Zadkine (France), Museu Coleção Berardo (Portugal), Fundação Iberê Camargo and Museu de Arte da Pampulha (Brazil).

In 2004 they received the Nam June Paik Award, in Germany and in 2007, they represented Brazil at the 52nd Venice Biennial.

They are authors of several public art works, including a permanent installation for the Institut de Physique du Globe in Paris, and a piece commissioned by the Louvre Museum for its new Conservation Center in Liévin.

In 2024, they were nominated for the Prix Marcel Duchamp.

O seu trabalho explora a compreensão e a representação da realidade através da linguagem, dos códigos e dos sistemas visuais. O seu trabalho navega entre texto, som e imagem em diferentes meios, propondo novas formas de tradução. Partindo de um vasto leque de fontes, incluindo a história das ideias, a astronomia, a história da arte, a filosofia e a literatura, as suas investigações conduzem à criação de esculturas, instalações, textos, performances e desenhos com o objetivo de propor novos processos de criação de significado através das formas de arte.
