Bio

Armanda Duarte (Praia do Ribatejo, 1961), studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts, in Lisbon, where she lives and works.

Armanda Duarte’s work is site-specific to such a degree that her proposals are actually determined by her observation and analysis of each given space. She observes the characteristics and details of each context in search of the essence which will lead the process of creation up to the work’s final reception. Her spatial poetics, which involve drawing, sculpture, installation and architecture, provoke subtle and intimate experiences.

Armanda’s stripped down, austere and delicate stagings result from the manipulation and composition of everyday objects such as stones, cutlery or tin can lids according to precise objectives such as measurement, balancing and replication. In her work, objects and simple gestures are subjected to almost scientific processes of repetition and systematisation that imply their conceptualisation, the definition of research criteria, and the normalisation of rigorous collection and editing procedures.

Armanda Duarte’s intense activity ultimately leads to an apparently unproductive, mute, discreet, at times almost imperceptible or even microscopic result.

She has presented her work regularly, in both solo and group exhibitions, since the 1980’s. Armanda Duarte (Praia do Ribatejo, 1961), estudou na Faculdade de Belas Artes de Lisboa, cidade onde vive e trabalha. Em 1996 e 2006 recebeu apoio da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian e, em 2001, da Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento (FLAD).

A especificidade do lugar é de tal forma determinante no trabalho de Armanda Duarte que as suas propostas artísticas são realizadas em função da sua observação e análise. A artista observa as características e detalhes de cada um desses contextos para encontrar a essência a partir da qual conduzirá o processo de criação até ao momento de recepção da obra. A sua poética espacial integra o desenho, a escultura, a instalação e a arquitetura, provocando experiências subtis e intimistas.

Armanda produz encenações despojadas, austeras e delicadas, que resultam de ações de manipulação e composição de objetos quotidianos como pedras, talheres ou tampas de latas de conserva, de acordo com objetivos precisos como medir, equilibrar, replicar. No seu trabalho, objetos e gestos simples são sujeitos a processos repetitivos e sistemáticos, quase científicos, que implicam a conceptualização da ação, a definição de critérios de pesquisa, a normalização de procedimentos de recolha e a edição rigorosa.

O intenso labor de Armanda Duarte apresenta um resultado aparentemente im- produtivo, silencioso, discreto, por vezes quase imperceptível ou mesmo microscópico.

Expõe, com regularidade, individual e colectivamente, desde finais dos anos 80.
